Callino Quartet

string quartet

Sarah Sexton, Tom Hankey, violins
Rebecca Jones, viola
Sarah McMahon, cello

The fresh and enthusiastic approach of the Callino Quartet has impressed audiences at home and abroad from Canada to the Czech Republic.  Their concert programmes range from the classical quartet repertoire to 21st century music.   The quartet has worked with diverse performers including the Vogler and Belcea string quartets, double bassist Edgar Meyer, pianist Barry Douglas, rock band The Arcade Fire and jazz guitarist John Abercrombie and composers Edgar Meyer, Peteris Vasks, Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, Ian Wilson, Raymond Deane, Ronan Guilfoyle and Kimmo Hakola.  In 2010 they were selected as one of three quartets worldwide to participate in a week of workshops with the world famous Kronos Quartet in Carnegie Hall which culminated in a standing ovation performance in Carnegie Hall of works by Astor Piazzolla, Aleksandra Vrebalov and Terry Riley.  Regular performers at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry, where the ensemble was formed in 1999, they have been anchor quartet at the WCM Easter Festival in Cork.   Winners of second prize in 2008 Tromp International String Quartet in the Netherlands, the quartet has regularly been broadcast on  RTE Lyric FM, BBC Radio 3 and RTE TV.  Their first commercial CD of works by Ian Wilson on the Riverrun label was followed by a Louth Contemporary Music Society recording of music by Arvo Pärt, Valentin Silvestrov, John Tavener and Alexander Knaifel and recently a CD with Swedish jazz singer and composer Sophie Dunér.   The Quartet has recently recorded a CD featuring Haydn's "The Lark", Janacek's "Kreutzer Sonata" and Schubert's "Rosamunde" quartet.  A new recording of Haydn’s Seven Last Words with poetry written and performed by former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion is due for release in 2015.

The Quartet will tour to six Irish venues in April 2015 with Irish soprano Ailish Tynan
